Saturday

Slept in this morning for the first time. It felt good to not use an alarm. Missed breakfast so we had to improvise on our way to DC. Duck Donuts it is. Coffee and donuts, breakfast of champions.

We made it to DC. We walked 5 miles to get to the Supreme Court, Capitol and the White House.

At the White House we ran into some of the other students from class 275.

Had dinner at the Old Ebbitts Grill next to the White House. Excellent food and service. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

We made it back to our car after a long walk to all the memorials. We ended up walking 11.5 miles.

Friday

It’s Friday!!!! I’m not sure what the weekend will bring but I am sure we will figure out something. It is suppose to be cold again.

Started off the day with a guest speaker in my Leading at Risk Employees class. An FBI agent that struggled with alcoholism for many years came in and gave his story. This account covered not only the disease of alcoholism but his personal struggles at home and his work struggles. His account put alcoholism into perspective and highlighted the problems it can create for police leaders. He gave us all some valuable things to consider in the workplace.

Had a great physical training session to wrap up the week. I wish it wasn’t right after lunch but we got through it. Did some running on the track to include sprints. One must be careful sprinting in 39 degree weather. After PT we took a group photo by the pain tree.

The below photo depicts the patches from everyone in my section, Section 2. Thanks for the photos Craig.

A few of us are on our way to Georgetown for dinner tonight. Me, Tjörvi, Dave, Mike and Josh ended up at the Berliner for some brauts.

Thursday

It’s warmer today than it has been in a while. It’s 48 degrees and raining today.

We have a full day of classes today, to include physical training in the pool. I’m not sure what that will consist of but after lunch I’m sure Courtney will let us know.

We are currently listening to a lecture about the Nickel Mines Amish school shooting that took place in 2006, where several Amish girls were killed by a gunman. Very emotional presentation by an officer that was part of the incident. Very emotional presentation by an officer that was part of the incident.

PT wasn’t too bad. We did some water aerobics and cardio then hit the deck for some core exercises. You feel great, when it’s all over!!

Got out of class a little early today and beat everyone to the cardio room. Was able to get 20 miles in on the bike and 2000 meters on the rowing machine, all before dinner.

I’m going to hit the library tonight and try to get a couple assignments done before the weekend. The rain finally moved out, it rained most of the day.

Wednesday

We started off the day today with a physical fitness challenge as a class. We ran 2.7 miles outside in a brisk 34 degree weather. I finished the run, rode 10 miles and rowed 2100 meters.

Tonight we are going to Washington DC to visit the law enforcement peace officer memorial. The whole class is going to shuttle up there in 5 buses. It will be a quick trip but will give us all an opportunity to pay tribute to the officers killed in the line of duty.

This will be our transportation tonight. A very nice bus line.

There’s nothing better than a code 3 police escort to Washington DC with cops on Harley Davidsons.

The ceremony at the memorial was very moving. Colors were presented, followed by the singing of the national anthem by Alex, from Romania. The first international student to sing the anthem. This was followed by a role call of fallen officers by the students of FBINA class 275.

I had the honor of reading off the names of Pomona Police Officers; Daniel Fraembs, Shaun Diamond and Greggory Casillas. As we stood at the memorial and listened to the bagpipes, I couldn’t help but think about the 9 officers that have been killed in 2019, since I started the academy. Their names will be added to the 21,541 names already on the wall.

Tuesday

Woke up to another cold morning. Good thing there is no physical training today. Started off with a couple good classes today. We discussed employee wellness and leadership crises. I learned an interesting statistic today, that was applicable to both classes; for the last three years officer suicide has exceeded the number of officers killed in the line of duty. Definitely something that should be considered by everyone in the profession.

After class Martin, Bill and I went to get a haircut. The word is Kim’s is the best haircut in town, so we had to check it out. We arrived and were greeted with open arms. Haircut, straight razor shave, hot towel, and back massage all included for $13. Great people, great haircut.

Monday

We have today off for the Martin Lutheran King holiday. A few of us are heading down to Monticello to take a look at Thomas Jefferson’s place. We walked outside prepared for the cold, so I thought. Man I about died. It’s not normal to wear a beanie and gloves in the car.

We made it to Monticello. What a beautiful piece of property, rich in history.

Bill (Arkansas), Dave (Nevada), Chonman (CA), Martin (Las Vegas), and me.

Sunday

I decided to sleep in this morning. Stayed up late last night reviewing the results of my EQ test from my emotional intelligence class. That’s the first time I have taken a test like this. Very insightful.

I think today will be a lazy day since it is cold and windy, the academy is quiet from most people leaving and championship football is on. I managed to write a paper this morning before lunch. I have been trying to write a little everyday. I have about 8 papers to complete and they range from 3 pages to 10 pages.

Went to the gym and rode 25 miles on the bike. I only have 189 miles to go to complete my goal of 275. I sure wish the seats were a little more comfortable. With the workout out of the way I’m now gonna watch some football.
